The PennHIP Program is a radiographic (x-ray) screening method for the assessment of canine hip joint laxity. It provides a distraction index (DI) which is a value representing the degree of laxity of the hip joints and provides a risk assessment for the probability of developing the osteoarthritis of hip dysplasia.
The PennHIP x-ray series consists of 3 separate views: the distraction view, the compression view and the hip-extended view. The hip extended view is used to assess for the presence of osteoarthritis (OA) of the hip joint. The distraction and compression views are used to obtain accurate and precise measurements of joint laxity and congruity (conformation).
The data obtained from the x-rays is submitted into a large database, which as it grows allows us to find out more information about the aetiology, prediction and genetic basis of hip dysplasia. The distraction index for your pet is also compared to data from other dogs of the same breed, providing information as to where your dog sits within its breed and if it has suitable hip confirmation to be bred.
